The men's 4 x 400 meter relay at the 1990 European Athletics Championships was held on September 31 and 1, 1990 in the Poljud Stadium in Split .
Great Britain became European champion with the line-up of Paul Sanders , Kriss Akabusi , John Regis and Roger Black as well as Brian Whittle and Philip Brown, who were also used in the preliminary stages . With their winning time in the final, the British team set a new European record. Second place went to the Federal Republic of Germany with Klaus Just , Edgar Itt , Carsten Köhrbrück and Norbert Dobeleit as well as Ulrich Schlepütz and Jörg Vaihinger, who were also used in the preliminary run . Bronze went to the GDR with Rico Lieder , Karsten Just , Thomas Schönlebe and Jens Carlowitz as well as Jan Lenzke, who was also used in the run-up .
The runners used in the heats for the medal winners also received corresponding precious metal. The championship / European record, on the other hand, was only available to the four runners who started in the final for Great Britain.

Record improvement
The European championship relay from Great Britain improved the existing EM record in the line-up of Paul Sanders , Kriss Akabusi , John Regis and Roger Black in the final on September 1st by 1.62 seconds to 2: 58.22 minutes and at the same time set a new European record .
Preliminary round
August 31, 1990
The preliminary round was held in two runs. The first three seasons per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the two fastest seasons - highlighted in light green - qualified for the final. With only nine teams, only one of them had to be eliminated.
