Roger N. Beachy
Roger Neil Beachy (born October 4, 1944 in Plain City , Ohio ) is an American phytopathologist .
Live and act
Roger Beachy studied biology at Goshen College and received his Ph.D. in Phytopathology from Michigan State University . From 1978 to 1991 he was a professor at Washington University . From 1991 to 1998, Beachy was Head of the Plant Biology Department at the Scripps Research Institute , where he was Professor of Cell Biology and Head of Tropical Biotechnology. In 1987 he became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . In 1997, Beachy was elected to the National Academy of Sciences . He is the founding president of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, founded in 1998 . Beachy was the first director of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture from October 2009 to May 2011 . He was also a senior scientist at the US Department of Agriculture from January to October 2010 .
During his time at Washington University, Beachy worked with Monsanto to develop the first genetically modified food plant , a virus-resistant tomato . The coat protein- mediated resistance method he discovered was then used by researchers around the world to produce virus-resistant plants. In 2001 he was awarded the Wolf Prize in Agriculture together with James E. Womack . The Michigan State University awarded him the same year an honorary doctorate .
