Roger North, 2nd Baron North (born February 27, 1530 in London , † December 3, 1600 ibid) was an English politician of the Tudor period.

Life and parliamentary work

Roger North was born on February 27, 1530 in London to Edward North , who was raised to Baron North in 1542 . Since his father played an important role under Henry VIII , his path as a politically active person was to a certain extent predetermined: close ties to the Tudors , parliamentary career in the lower and upper houses, and military and administrative services. He began his parliamentary career as a Member of the House of Commons for Cambridgeshire , which his father had already held. He occupied this seat in 1555, 1559 and from 1563 to 1564. In 1564, after the death of his father, he inherited his title and became a member of the House of Lords . On January 15, 1559, he was beaten on the occasion of the coronation of Elizabeth I as Knight of the Bath .

Extra-parliamentary activities

Roger North initially took up a legal practice and was accepted into Gray's Inn in 1561 . In 1565 he was named drafting commissioner for Cambridgeshire . In January 1587 he accompanied Henry Radclyffe, 4th Earl of Sussex, to Vienna to present Emperor Maximilian II with the Order of the Garter on behalf of the Queen . Upon his return, he was named Cambridgeshire High Steward . In 1572 he was one of the peers who accused Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk of high treason. He then became ambassador to France. On his return from this diplomatic mission, the Queen visited him in September 1578 in his country estate, Kirtling Tower . Another, this time military use, was his participation in a campaign under Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester in the Netherlands. He was wounded during the siege of Zutphen . Because of his bravery, the Queen proposed him to the Knight Banneret . In 1588 he became Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, as well as captain of the light cavalry in the royal bodyguard. On August 30, 1596, Elisabeth appointed him to the Privy Council and at the same time appointed him Treasurer of the Household . Roger North was one of the signatories to the treaty of August 16, 1598 with the Netherlands.

Roger North, 2nd Baron North, died on December 3, 1600 and was buried in Kirtling. Since his eldest son Sir John had died in 1597, his grandson Dudley North inherited him as 3rd Baron North.
