Rohdea japonica is the only plant species of the genus Rohdea in the subfamily Nolinoideae within the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). It is native from East Asia and Southwest China to Japan. The generic name Rohdea honors the botanist Michael Rohde (1782–1812) from Bremen .

Rohdea japonica is an evergreen, perennial herbaceous plant with rhizomes and fibrous roots. The leaves standing together in a basal rosette are broadly lanceolate, 15 to 50 cm long and 2.5 to 7 cm wide, with a pointed tip.

The flowers are grouped together in compressed, 3 to 4 cm long, dense, spiky inflorescences . The pale yellow flowers are 4 to 5 mm long and threefold. The red berries have a diameter of about 8 mm and are grouped together in dense clusters.

Rohdea japonica is cultivated as an ornamental plant. It is called wan nian qing in Chinese and omoto in Japanese .

Rohdea japonica is also used in traditional Chinese medicine, although the plant is considered inedible and possibly even poisonous.
