Roland Fischnaller (born June 14, 1975 in Villnöß ) is a former Italian ski racer . The South Tyrolean specialized in the fast downhill and Super-G disciplines.

biography

In 1994 Fischnaller took part in the Junior World Championships in Lake Placid , his best result there was 24th place in the downhill. In the European Cup he reached his first podium on December 11, 1995 with second place in the downhill from Val Gardena . Five days later, he also started his first World Cup race in Val Gardena and finished 42nd downhill. In the next few years only a few appearances in the World Cup followed, he mainly focused on the European Cup. There he celebrated his first and only victory on January 21, 1999 in the downhill from Falcade and achieved second place in the downhill classification with two further top ten places. With this success he secured a place in the World Cup and was promoted to the Italian A-squad. In the Super-G he was also twice in the top ten and was sixth in the final ranking.

From the 1999/2000 season , Fischnaller started regularly in the World Cup. On the downhill from Wengen on January 15, 2000, he was among the top 30 for the first time, and twice more in March 2000 in Kvitfjell with 23rd in the downhill and 27th in the Super-G. At the beginning of the 2000/01 season he did not make it into the points in the first five races, which made him all the more surprising when he achieved his greatest World Cup success on December 16, 2000: In the descent of Val-d'Isère , the Italian with start number 47 drove behind his Teammates Alessandro Fattori and Kristian Ghedina in third place.

From now on, Fischnaller was able to place himself regularly in the points, but never repeat the success of Val-d'Isère. In the 2001/02 season he achieved his second best World Cup result on December 28 in the downhill from Bormio with ninth place. In February 2002 he took part in the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and finished 17th in Downhill and Super-G as the best Italian. At the 2003 World Championships in St. Moritz , he was only 27th in Super-G. Three weeks later he achieved his best World Cup result of the season with twelfth place in the downhill from Garmisch-Partenkirchen .

In the 2003/04 season, Fischnaller placed three times among the top 15 and was Italian downhill champion, but in the following World Cup season he only reached the points once. In January 2006 he finished 15th in the downhill from Wengen and a week later he was 16th in Kitzbühel . His last good World Cup result was in the downhill from Bormio on December 29th, 2006, where he once again finished twelfth reached.

On January 13, 2007, Fischnaller tore a cruciate ligament on the downhill from Wengen and had to end the season early. He then returned to the World Cup, but only achieved the points in the downhill from Wengen in January 2008. After the 2007/08 season he announced his retirement. In total, Fischnaller contested 115 races (83 downhill runs and 32 Super-G) in his World Cup career.
