Rolandas Pavilionis

Rolandas Pavilionis (born July 3, 1944 in Šiauliai , † May 10, 2006 in Vilnius ) was a Lithuanian scientist, philosopher and politician and from 2004 until his death member of the European Parliament for the Liberalų Demokratų Partija as part of the Union for one Europe of Nations .

education

Pavilionis passed his Abitur in 1962 at the evening school in Šiauliai while he worked in a bicycle factory during the day. In the same year he enrolled in the Faculty of Philology at Vilnius University . The studies were interrupted from 1963 to 1966 by two years of basic military service in the Soviet Army . In 1968 Pavilionis finished his diploma studies and switched to the apprenticeship in logic at the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR , which he finished as a candidate of sciences .

Research and Teaching

After several years of lecturing in Vilnius, Pavilionis was able to conduct a research stay with the exile from Algirdas Julius Greimas at the Sorbonne from 1977 to 1978 , which he completed with a habilitation . In 1982 Pavilionis was appointed professor at Vilnius University. In the course of glasnost and perestroika he was one of the protagonists of the university reform and the elimination of ideologically influenced teaching content from the university. From 1988 he was Vice-Rector and from 1990 to 2000 Rector .

Pavilionis was a full member of several scientific academies and holder of various orders and awards.

Seimas member

In the cadence from 2000 to 2004 Pavilionis was a non-party member of the Seima for the Naujoji Sąjunga . Here he was active in several parliamentary committees and committees, in particular as chairman of the committee for education and science. After the events of September 11, 2001 and the escalation that followed, he was the only Lithuanian politician who openly spoke out against a military option and joining the coalition of the willing .

EP member

In 2004 Pavilionis was elected to the European Parliament. He was deputy chairman of the Union for a Europe of Nations group , member of the committee on culture and education , member of the delegation for relations with the countries of Central America , deputy to the committee on civil liberties, justice and home affairs , deputy to the subcommittee on human rights and deputy in the delegation for relations with Belarus .

After his death, Eugenijus Maldeikis moved up for him.

family

Pavilionis was married to Marija Aušrinė Pavilionienė (* 1944), philologist, professor and politician. His son is Žygimantas Pavilionis (* 1971), ambassador.
