The Roland fountain in front of the town hall

Rolandbrunnen or Rolandsbrunnen is the popular popular name for the fountain on the historic market square in Hildesheim .

The basin of the octagonal stick fountain from the Renaissance consists of eight sandstone slabs . Six of them have reliefs depicting the deeds of the twelve good heroes, the other two heraldic tablets . The crowning figure in the middle of the fountain was and is often believed to be the embodiment of Roland , but only represents a town servant equipped with a lance and shield . Nevertheless, the term "market fountain", which the town of Hildesheim uses on its website, has not been able to establish itself .

A first fountain was built on the market square in the old town in 1540. The original of today's fountain dates from 1548. It was destroyed in World War II. In 1986 this fountain was replicated true to the original.
