Rolf Emmermann
Rolf Emmermann (born January 12, 1940 in Wolfenbüttel ) is a German geoscientist .
Life
Between 1959 and 1965 Emmermann studied mineralogy , crystallography and geochemistry in Braunschweig, Frankfurt and Munich. He received his doctorate in 1967 and completed his habilitation in mineralogy at the University of Karlsruhe in 1973 . In 1974 he became a professor at the University of Karlsruhe, and in 1981 he became a full professor at the University of Gießen .
In 1991 he was appointed founding director of the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ), and was its chairman and scientific director until his retirement in 2007. At the same time, he continued to hold the chair for mineralogy and petrology at the University of Giessen.
Emmermann held numerous honorary positions in scientific committees: for example, he became president of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors (GDNÄ) in 2001 and was Heinrich Hertz visiting professor in Karlsruhe in 2002. From 1997 to 2012 Emmermann was President of the GeoUnion Alfred Wegener Foundation , the umbrella organization of German geoscientific research institutions and specialist societies. Furthermore, Emmermann was a member of the board of directors of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers (HGF) and spokesman for the HGF research area “Earth and Environment”. He was a founding member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences (BBAW) and is a member of the German Academy of Engineering Sciences (Acatech) and the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . In 1991 he was elected a full member of the Academia Europaea .
Emmermann still holds important positions in the scientific organization, including in particular the chairmanship of the Brandenburg State University Council.
From 1986 to 1995 Emmermann was the coordinator of the continental deep drilling program of the Federal Republic of Germany (KTB). He developed the scientific concept of the KTB in 1983/1984. In 1996 he became "Executive Committee Chairman" of the "International Continental Scientific Drilling Program" (ICDP).

- In 1999 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class.
- In 2001 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Braunschweig .
- In 2002 he was awarded the Walter Kertz Medal of the German Geophysical Society .
- In 2008 he was honored with the Great Federal Cross of Merit.
