Political party

MP

From 1994 on he was a member of the German Bundestag and from January 2003 until his departure in 2013 he was spokesman for the energy working group of the SPD parliamentary group . In the negotiations for the grand coalition, he still took part in the relevant specialist group.

Energy policy

In the summer of 2010, like the SPD, he refused to extend the service life of the nuclear power plants operated in Germany and demanded that the nuclear phase-out agreed in 2002 by the Schröder I cabinet with the four NPP operators be maintained. “Although the generation costs of nuclear power are comparatively low, the nuclear industry has so far not made any contribution to reducing price pressure in industry, which could be done, for example, by selling power plant disks. So there is no automatism between the type of generation and the electricity price level. High prices are also an expression of supplier behavior. "

Social Commitment

From April 1998 to June 2008 Hempelmann was president of the Rot-Weiss Essen soccer club . He is also a member of the advisory boards of Hitachi Europe GmbH in Duisburg and the Federal Network Agency for Electricity, Gas, Telecommunications, Post and Railways in Bonn.
