Goalkeeper Jahn 1957 for Turbine Erfurt

Rolf Jahn (born October 8, 1927 in Apolda ; † May 3, 2001 in Birstein ) was a German football goalkeeper.

Athletic career

Rolf Jahn began his career at 1. SV Jena . After the Second World War and the subsequent four years of captivity, he played in the first team of Motor Jena from 1950. There he played 21 games in the GDR league and 46 games in the second-rate GDR league . In 1954 Jahn moved to the reigning GDR champion Turbine Erfurt , where he played a major role in winning the second championship title in 1955. In 24 games there were only 21 goals conceded for Erfurt thanks to his saves. By 1959 he played a total of 128 league games for Erfurt. After relegation in 1959, he ended his active career.

After playing several games in the GDR's B selection, he came on October 27, 1957 for his only assignment in the GDR national soccer team . In front of 110,000 spectators, the GDR lost the World Cup qualifier against CSR 1: 4 in Leipzig and was eliminated.

“Four months later, after defeats in Brno and Cardiff, the World Cup dreams came to an end. Janos Gyarmati started to rebuild the national team. Against Czechoslovakia in Leipzig - this time there are 640,000 advance ticket orders - Rolf Jahn is in goal for the first time. Gyarmati thinks big things about Erfurt. In the big leagues he delivers brilliant parades week after week. The strikers famously shoot him. For years, the ambitious Thuringian only fought for this day. Now he's there. But the celebrated goalkeeper is unrecognizable. Rolf Jahn lets the simplest balls pass. If the Czechs only come close to the penalty area, the 120,000 spectators scream. How can Gyarmati put such a 'flycatcher' in the box? 'Normally, Rolf should have held two or three things. During the game I thought: Why does it always go wrong? ' Georg Buschner becomes quiet, as if he wanted to apologize to Rolf Jahn almost 50 years later. What the spectators do not know and what remains hidden even from the team: The keeper is seriously injured. Since the tenth minute he has barely been able to move because of back pain. But a substitution was not possible at that time. After the game, which the GDR lost 4-1, the doctors in the hospital found a tear in the fourth lumbar vertebra. Rolf Jahn never plays football again. "

In 1961, Rolf Jahn moved to Hesse before the Wall was built . There he worked as a teacher and was a coach at various lower-class clubs.
