Rolf Stang (born July 26, 1935 in Arolsen , Waldeck district ) is a German musician, photo journalist, photographer, editor for agencies and magazines as well as a collector of historical photos of pop culture.

Rolf Stang was born as the fourth child of the senior teacher Werner Stang and his wife Ilse, geb. Waldschmidt, born. In 1957 he graduated from high school at the "Alte Landesschule Korbach" / Waldeck. During his school days he studied music from 1950 onwards, majoring in cello, a. a. with Wille, Music Academy Kassel, and with Ludwig Hoelscher , Music Academy Detmold . He had numerous public appearances as a soloist and in chamber music associations. From 1957/58 he studied theater and newspaper studies at the University of Munich . At the same time he was an intern at Bavaria Film Munich-Geiselgasteig and volunteered at dpa Deutsche Presse-Agentur Bilderdienst Munich.

Stang gained notoriety when the British-European-Airways flight 609 crashed in 1958 with Manchester United footballers at Munich-Riem Airport . He was the first photographer at the scene of the accident. His photos led u. a. 10 years later in England for the acquittal of the flight captain James Thain , because only shortly after the crash there was a heavy snowdrift. He took these photos with a Zeiss Ikon Ikoflex roman.1b. The Braun “Hobby Standard” flash unit used for this caused the seemingly oversized snow crystals due to its unfavorable color temperature.

In 1959, Rolf Stang became the youngest editor and head of duty at dpa-Bildzentrale Frankfurt a. M. employed. From 1965 Stang was the head of the Illustrierte Quick magazine , Munich, and in 1966 he held the same position at the Revue published by the joint publisher (Martens) . Until the sale and the discontinuation of the publishing house in 1967, he was a member of the editors-in-chief as personal assistant to the editor -in- chief Karl-Heinz Hagen . In 1968 he was editor for special assignments at Burda-Verlag, Offenburg; here he worked with Helmut Markwort and Horst Fust . From 1969 he was part of the development team for the new magazines Eltern and Jasmin . From here he moved to the youth magazine Bravo and was a member of the chief editor as production and image manager until 1978 (1) . All magazines were published by Axel Springer Verlag .

In 1985 he was the office manager of the German subsidiary of the world's largest photo agency The Image Bank (now Getty Images ). From 1989 to 1995 he was head of service and head of image production for the youth magazine Pop / Rocky (Marquard Media Group Switzerland).

In 1996 he took over the general agency of the French inventor company Airstar Space Lighting (Grenoble / France) for Germany and Austria.

At the turn of the millennium, he revised the “Chronology of Pop” photo collection that had begun in the late 1950s. The website (3) describes the undisputed world's largest color slide collection on pop culture from around 1960 to 1995. The focus is on international pop music. Over 12,000 selected, “iconic” photos of 786 individual music stars or groups come from 861 photographers. The collection has already been extensively reported, including a. in the Süddeutsche Zeitung and on Bavarian TV (3) .
