24 Hours - Two Sides of Crime (original title: De Dag ) is a Flemish drama series produced by FBO and Woestijnvis in cooperation with VIER and ZDFneo . The series, written by Julie Mahieu and Jonas Geirnaert , tells the story of two very well prepared hostage takers in a bank branch.

The special thing about the structure of this series is that two consecutive episodes each have the same timing. The one episode directed by Gilles Coulier tells the story from the point of view of the police and the family members involved. The next episode, directed by Dries Vos , then shows what happens to hostage takers and hostages at the same time. This structure always alternates.

The series has been available in Belgium since March 26, 2018 on Telenet Play and was later broadcast on TV channel VIER . In the Netherlands , the series has been available from Ziggo since August 1, 2018 . In Germany , the series has been shown in the German dubbed version on ZDFneo since October 5, 2018 .

action

Mercedes De Vos, Roeland and Ibrahim from the DSU, a special police unit in a small Flemish town, are called to a bank robbery and hostage-taking to negotiate with the hostage-takers. After clearing the area in front of the bank, positioning snipers and setting up a command center near the bank, negotiations begin. The hostage takers demand one million euros and a helicopter to escape. Ibrahim puts them off that so much money cannot be found so quickly, and manages to get the hostage-takers to release a hostage. Meanwhile, two other hostages have to weld open a safe in the basement of the bank and flush the money in small tubes down the toilet. These tubes reach a sewage treatment plant through the sewers. The hostage-takers have already fled there with the three remaining hostages from the bank without the knowledge of the police.

After the police discover that they have been eavesdropped on a previously hidden phone, they decide to storm the bank. When they do not find the hostage-takers and the three remaining hostages there, they leave the hostage-takers in the belief that they have moved away from the bank. When this lie construct is exposed due to an unfortunate mistake, the hostage-takers panic and flee the sewage treatment plant. However, a hostage escaped them shortly before and when they leave the other two hostages behind, one of them dies while trying to escape. The last hostage, who is actually an accomplice, breaks off the escape and ties himself up again so that the police can find her.

In the last episodes the viewer learns that another hostage from the bank is the real mastermind. She tries to take out the other members of her gang so that she gets all the money. When she has already killed one of the accomplices, the other two hostage-takers find out about her. Meanwhile, there is still a policewoman in the building, so that it will soon be surrounded. Ibrahim tries to resolve the situation through another negotiation. When this fails, the building is stormed.

background

On October 12, 2016 it was announced that VIER and Telenet have teamed up to produce the fiction series De Dag, conceived and written by Julie Mahieu and her partner Jonas Geirnaert . Filming began at the end of October 2016 in Bruges , Brasschaat , Berchem and Schoten .

reception

"With a nested plot, the threads of which converge more with each episode and slowly but surely result in a larger whole, they have succeeded in creating an enriching piece of television."

- Julian Weinberger : teleschau - the media service

“The two alternative perspectives on each identical period of time enable the viewer to collect and combine information, fill in gaps and understand why certain details that previously seemed incomprehensible in an episode make sense. [...] In addition to the successful suspense elements and the meta-level message of the various perspectives instead of a supposedly objective truth, the series also addresses specific social problems. "
