Life

After high school and military service, Töpperwien studied journalism, history and political science in Göttingen and graduated in 1975 with a master's degree .

During his studies, Töpperwien worked as a freelancer for the sports department of the Göttinger Tageblatt . Through a seminar paper (the topic was a comparison between the sports show and the current sports studio ), with the help of his journalism professor, he came into contact with the ZDF , where he started as a freelancer in 1973. The permanent position followed four years later. Töpperwien reported 1444 Bundesliga games . His last report for the current sports studio was the north derby Werder Bremen against HSV on September 25, 2010.

He got into negative headlines in 1996 when he objected to an inflated brothel bill on ZDF stationery with the words: “I'm not a marathon man”. On May 14, 2000, he suffered severe burns while carelessly handling high- proof alcohol and matches while intoxicated with cocaine and was in the hospital for several weeks.

In 2010 Töpperwien published an autobiography and retired as a television reporter on his 60th birthday. The FAZ said:

“The ZDF sports reporter Rolf Töpperwien is retiring this evening. Before that, he quickly wrote down his life. His book oozes megalomania and innocent confessions of sin. You already miss him. "
