After attending the secondary school in Waidhofen / Ybbs, Rolf Walter completed a teaching degree for physical exercise and biology in Vienna and Innsbruck. He then took up teaching at the Bundes-Oberstufenrealgymnasium Innsbruck.

During his studies he was accepted into the mountain climbing club Die Karwendler and undertook difficult trips in the Alpine region. Together with his wife Senta, he climbed the Nevado Huascarán ( 6768  m ) and the Ranrapalca ( 6162  m ) in the Peruvian Andes as well as the Piks Lenin ( 7134  m ), Ismoil Somoni ( 7495  m ) and Korschenewskaja ( 7105  m ) in the Pamirs . On May 12, 1970 he was the first to climb the 8383  m high Lhotse Shar in the Himalayas together with Sepp Mayerl , using bottled oxygen. On May 9, 1975 he undertook an ascent of Yalung Kang ( Kangchenjunga W summit ), 8505  m .

In 1972 he received the Tyrolean State Sports Decoration (medal). Walter was also able to achieve top places in international sailing regattas (catamarans) in the Mediterranean, the Baltic and North Seas.

Together with his wife Senta, he froze to death on September 2 or 3, 1985, almost 70 m below the Mont Blanc summit after climbing the Peuterey ridge in a sudden fall in the weather. The weather stations later stated wind peak speeds of up to 200 km / h and temperatures around 15 degrees below zero for this period.
