The two taxiway bridges at Frankfurt airport run on the Federal Highway 3 between junctions Mönchhof Triangle (48) and Kelsterbach (49), the high-speed line Cologne-Rhine / Main near the building Frankfurt airport train station and the airport ring called County road  823.

Building history

The bridges connect the airport's existing flight operations areas with the new, 2800-meter-long northwest runway, which is north of the motorway and the railway line.

Construction began on May 8, 2009 and was completed a year later in 2010. First the support pillars were raised and in May 2010 the road slabs were laid in several weekend nights when the motorway was completely closed. This was followed by the installation of the security fence, surveillance systems and other infrastructure.

bridges

There are a total of five bridge structures. Two lead over the autobahn and the ICE route, two over the airport ring, and another bridge spans a service road within the airport site. Together with the ramp-like embankments up to the actual bridges, they form the east and west taxiways that connect the 220 hectare site of the Nordwestbahn with the airport. The bridges were built particularly wide in order to be able to see only little of the aircraft from the motorway and thus to avoid unnecessary braking maneuvers and onlookers among the motor vehicle drivers. The passage on the motorway, which is more reminiscent of a tunnel, was equipped with lighting and escape routes. The motorway has four lanes in both directions; if necessary, the hard shoulder can be made the fifth lane. In addition, there is a wide sidewalk in the "bridge tunnel".

Taxiway bridge west 1

The taxiway bridge West 1 is more than 90 meters long and up to 117 meters wide in the taxiway axis.

Taxiway bridge east 1

The taxiway bridge Ost 1 is more than 200 meters long and up to 220 meters wide in the taxiway axis. The bridge called Ost 1 is closer to the terminals.
