Romesh Weerawardane (born October 22, 1979 ) is a Sri Lankan chess player . He is the only International Master in Sri Lanka.

Life

Romesh Weerawardane has a Bachelor of Science degree and is a chess trainer. For example, he trained the Sri Lankan FIDE master Rajeendra Kalugampitiya .

With the Sri Lanka Chess Club (LKCC) he played on the second board of the Asian Club Chess Cup in al-Ain in 2008 . At the Asian Cities Tournament 2015 in Kalutara , he played on the top board for the team from Colombo . He plays club chess in Sri Lanka for the Fischer Chess Club , with which he has won the Sri Lanka Inter-club Super League several times.

In Sri Lanka, he won several tournaments, for example an international tournament in 2014 in Kalutara, Western Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Grand Prix 2016 in Colombo-Narahenpita. At the Sri Lankan individual championship in 2016, which was held in the VIP lounge of a hockey stadium in Colombo, he finished second behind Rajeendra Kalugampitiya.

For the national team of Sri Lanka he played at the Chess Olympiad 2010 in Khanty-Mansiysk on the third board and at the Chess Olympiad 2016 in Baku on the top board. He also played for the team at the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games 2013 in Incheon and at the Asian Team Championships 2014 in Tabriz on the fourth board and in 2016 in Abu Dhabi on the top board.

Title and rating

At the Asian zone tournament of Zone 3.2 in Colombo in February 2013, which was won by Ziaur Rahman from Bangladesh, Romesh Weerawardane received the title of International Master for his result of 6 points from 9 games, including a draw against the Bangladeshi grandmaster Niaz Murshed . He is the first and only Sri Lankan chess player to hold this title. Since 2014 he has also had the title of “ FIDE Instructor”, which is one level below the title of FIDE Trainer.

Its Elo rating is 2032 (as of April 2020), its highest rating to date was 2203 from July 2004 to March 2005.
