Ronald Joseph MacLean (born April 12, 1960 in Zweibrücken , Germany ) is a Canadian sports journalist for the television station CBC and reports mainly on ice hockey in the program Hockey Night in Canada .

Career

Ron MacLean was born when his father was stationed in Germany as an officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force . They returned to Canada 14 months after MacLean was born, where he grew up in the provinces of Nova Scotia and Alberta .

In 1978 MacLean began his career with a part-time job as a radio announcer and presenter for the local radio and television station CKRD . Six years later he was hired by the Calgary- based independent television broadcaster CFAC to host the broadcast of the games of the local NHL team, the Calgary Flames . He also briefly appeared on the regional news as a spokesperson for the sports news.

In 1986 he moved finally to the national television station CBC , where he initially reporting on the games of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL moderated and the following year the main presenter for the nationwide transmission of primetime telecast Hockey Night in Canada was. The most popular part of the program is the Coach's Corner segment , which MacLean has hosted together with former NHL coach Don Cherry since 1987 , and in which the current games are analyzed and events in the league are sometimes very controversial.

During his career with CBC, MacLean has also been active in television broadcasts outside the NHL. He has been part of the CBC's team of hosts at the Summer and Winter Olympics since 1988 and has participated in broadcasts of World Athletics Championships several times .

His involvement with CBC almost came to an end in 2002 when the broadcaster and MacLean could not initially agree on a new contract and MacLean threatened to switch to another broadcaster. The reactions of the media and the audience eventually led to an agreement.

MacLean has received five Gemini Awards for his work , including three awards for best presenter of a sports program.

Activity as an arbitrator

Ron MacLean was active as an amateur referee in addition to his work in television. He has directed games in the junior and senior sector as well as in university leagues in Canada. On September 29, 2006, he experienced the high point of his refereeing career when he directed an NHL preparation game between the Buffalo Sabers and the Pittsburgh Penguins . In the meantime, however, MacLean has ended his arbitration work.
