The Flamingo International Airport ( IATA code : BON, ICAO code : TNCB ) (proper name: Bonaire International Airport) is the airport of the island of Bonaire , one of the Netherlands belonging to particular communities in the Caribbean . It is located near the city of Kralendijk .

History and expansion plans

The Flamingo Airport was created at the instigation of the commander of the US soldiers stationed on Bonaire from 1943 as a replacement for the first Bonaires airfield located further north, opened in 1936, which consisted of a 475 meter long runway and a shed. Construction work on the new airport began in December 1943; flight operations began in 1945. The runway , which was rebuilt between 1953 and 1955, was extended several times over the years; In 1960 it was 1,430 meters long and 30 meters wide, and in 1970 it was 1,750 meters long. A new terminal was put into operation in 1976. The runway was extended to 2,400 meters in length and 45 meters in width in 1980 and extended to 2,880 meters in 2000.

Since 2008, a master plan for the expansion of the airport, originally planned for 15 years, has been implemented. Its first phase, a complete renovation of the runway, was completed in 2011. The new fire station was opened in 2016, and the new tower was inaugurated a year later .

Further expansion plans include the construction of a new apron east of the existing aprons that can accommodate five wide- bodied aircraft . A new terminal is to be built by 2025 to the north of the new apron. Regardless of this, the expansion of the existing terminal began in early 2019 in order to be able to keep pace with the increased passenger volume.

Airport facilities

The only runway runs roughly in an east-west direction, has a length of 3,057 meters and is equipped with a turning area at both ends. Another turning area is in the east, about 700 meters before the end of runway 10, but may not be used by aircraft larger than Boeing 757-200 . The runway is equipped with runway edge lights and precision approach glide angle lights (PAPI) for both directions.

To the north of the runway, not far from its western end, there are three aprons. The main apron offers four parking positions for aircraft and is connected about 200 and 400 meters east of the threshold of runway 10 with this by two taxiways , each 24 meters wide . The terminal building is on the north side of this apron. Another apron with parking positions for two wide-body aircraft is located east of the terminal. It is connected to the runway by a 28 meter wide taxiway about 500 meters east of the runway threshold. The apron for general aviation is located in the west, immediately north of the threshold of runway 10, and is connected to it by two taxiways, each 17 meters wide.

The tower and the fire station were relocated to the east as part of the airport expansion. The approach to the new fire station branches off about 1150 meters east of the threshold of runway 10 to the north. The new apron with two taxiways to the runway and the planned terminal are also to be built in this area.
