Coaching career

As early as 1955, Suart Wigan Athletic took over as player-coach. After a year in Wigan , he moved to Scunthorpe United . After promotion with Scunthorpe in 1958, he went on to Blackpool FC , his first club as a player. There he replaced Joe Smith , under whom he had previously played. In early 1967, Blackpool split from Suart when the club faced relegation from the first division. As the head coach of Blackpool, he coached the team in 396 games, of which he won 126. During this time he trained later national players such as Alan Ball , Ray Charnley and Emlyn Hughes . After his release, he was assistant coach to Tommy Docherty at Chelsea . After Docherty's resignation and the unsuccessful start of the new coach Dave Sexton , he became head coach for the Blues for a year. He could not prevent the descent and was replaced by the Scots Eddie McCreadie . After his career he became a scout for Wimbledon FC . When the club ran into financial difficulties, he was fired in 2002.
