Ronald Basford

Stanley Ronald "Ron" Basford PC QC (* 22. April 1932 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ; † 31 January 2005 ) was a Canadian lawyer and politician of the Liberal Party .

Life

After attending school, Basford completed a course of study and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then completed a postgraduate degree in law with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and then took up a position as a lawyer .

After he ran unsuccessfully in the general election on June 18, 1962 , he was first elected as a member of the lower house in the election of April 8, 1963 for the constituency of Vancouver-Burrard . Since the general election of June 25, 1968 , Basford was a member of the House of Commons until his resignation on February 20, 1979 as a representative of the Vancouver Center constituency .

In July 1972 he was appointed Minister for Consumer and Business Affairs to the 20th Federal Cabinet by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau . He was then Minister of State for Urban Affairs and Minister of State Revenue from August 1974 to September 1975, before becoming Minister of Justice and Attorney General in September 1975 . In addition, he was acting Solicitor General from January 28 to February 1, 1978. On February 8, 1978, he resigned from his position as Minister of Justice and Attorney General for personal reasons.

After leaving the House of Commons in February 1979, he resumed his practice as a lawyer.
