Ronald Spelbos (born July 8, 1954 in Utrecht ) is a former Dutch football player and coach.

Player career

society

Spelbos began his active career in 1971 with Hollandia Victoria Combinatie , a lower class club from Amersfoort . In 1973 the club got into professional business and was renamed SC Amersfoort . For the 1974/75 season Spelbos decided to move to AZ Alkmaar '67 . He had a very successful time there. After the team was runner-up in the Eredivisie in 1980 , Alkmaar won the championship the following year. In the same year, the club won the KNVB Cup , which was defended for the 1981/82 season. Spelbos was an important pillar in the defense network during these years and contributed significantly to achieving the successes. In the summer of 1982, the central defender moved to neighboring Belgium, where he wore the club of Club Bruges for two years . The only title that Spelbos was able to win in these two years was the Brugse Metten , a cup competition held by the club. In 1984/85 he signed Ajax Amsterdam and the defender returned home. In the first year after his return, Spelbos won the third league title in his playing career. It should be his only one in Ajax dress. In 1986 and 1987, the defender celebrated winning the national cup twice. Spelbos then celebrated the greatest success at the European Cup Winners' Cup , when he and his team were able to hold the cup in their hands against the GDR representative 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig after a 1-0 win. In 1988 Spelbos announced the end of his career at the age of 34. Injuries made him do it.

National team

On September 10, 1980, Spelbos made his debut for the Orange in the 2-1 loss to Ireland . Seven years later, on October 28, 1987, he played for the Netherlands for the last time. Although Rinus Michels later nominated him for the European Football Championship in 1988 , Spelbos canceled due to injuries.

Coaching career

Spelbos began his coaching career in 1989 as assistant to Theo Vonk at FC Twente Enschede . During the 1992/93 season he took over the post of head coach at NAC Breda . He led the team to third place in the Eerste Divisie and successfully qualified for the Eredivisie. There he was seventh straight away. This was the best result for NAC since 1969. Breda finished tenth the following season. In the same year Spelbos moved to league competitor Vitesse Arnheim . But due to unsuccessfulness, they quickly separated again. In 1996 he took over at FC Utrecht , where it only lasted a year before he returned to NAC Breda for one season in 1998. Because of the threat of relegation, he was released before the end of the season. This was Spelbos' last coaching position so far. He then worked as a trainer for the Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbal Bond and in 2011 was the head scout for the Dutch national team.
