Distribution of the Rondonia marmoset

The Rondon's Marmoset ( Mico Rondoni ) is a western Brazil, in the state of Rondônia occurring representatives of marmosets (Callitrichidae). The species was only described in 2010 after the animals were long thought to be representatives of the brown marmoset ( Mico emiliae ).

distribution

The distribution area of just over 100,000 km² is bordered by the Rio Mamoré in the west, the Rio Madeira in the north and the Rio Ji-Paraná in the east. To the south, where the habitat of the black-tailed marmoset ( Mico melanurus ) adjoins, the boundary of the distribution area is less clear and coincides roughly with the mountainous region of Serra dos Pacaás Novos . Within this range, the occurrence of the monkey is extremely patchy. It seems to be absent in all areas in which Saguinus fuscicollis weddelli , a subspecies of the brown-backed tamarin , occurs, whereby Saguinus fuscicollis weddelli colonizes larger areas of the distribution area than the Rondonia marmoset. Since representatives of the marmosets no longer occur west of the Rio Mamoré and north of the Rio Madeira, the distribution area of the Rondonia marmoset is the furthest northwestern occurrence of the genus.

features

The specimens examined for the first description of the Rondonia marmoset had a head-to-trunk length of 29 to 24 cm and a weight of 250 to 400 g. There is also a 29.5 to 33 cm long tail. Within the marmoset, the Rondonia marmoset belongs to the species group around the silver monkey ( Mico argentatus ) and, like all representatives of the group, has a largely silver-gray fur. It differs from other members of the species group by the blackish hair on the forehead and the sides of the face, which become lighter and less dense in the vicinity of the bare ears and the neck. The top of the head is blackish to black-brown, on the forehead there is a clear white spot. The rear back section and the body-hugging sections of the legs are gray-brown. The color of the legs then gradually changes from gray-brown to red-brown on the thigh to blackish on the ankle. The tail is almost completely black, only reddish brown at its base and light at the tip.

Way of life

Like the marmosets , Rondonia marmosets are able to gnaw holes in tree bark to get at tree sap thanks to their specialized, chisel-like incisors. In order to be able to digest the milky sap of the rubber tree and related species, their digestive system is specially adapted and the appendix is complex and enlarged. The way of life and ecology of the Rondonia marmoset is still largely unexplored, but probably corresponds to that of other marmosets.

Danger

The Rondonia marmoset is relatively rare and is absent in a large part of its possible range, which is affected by extensive deforestation. It could be the most critically endangered species in the genus. At present, however, there is not enough data available for a more precise assessment of the risk.
