Río Mamoré |
The Río Mamoré is the right source river of the Río Madeira , the largest tributary of the Amazon in South America. The Río Mamoré, with a water flow of around 8200 m² / s and a length of around 1170 kilometers, is one of the largest rivers in Bolivia , which arises from the confluence of the Río Ichilo and Río Chapare . The Río Grande is the longest right tributary and is also considered a source river.
River course
The headwaters of the Río Mamoré arise on the northern slopes of the Cordillera of Cochabamba , east of the city of Cochabamba . Another possible main river is the Río Chimoré , which flows into the Río Ichilo at Puerto Villaroel, about 150 kilometers before it joins the Río Chapare . From here the river bears the name Río Mamoré. About twenty kilometers after the confluence, the Río Grande , which has comparatively little water and is often referred to as the source river because of its length, flows from the right . The Mamoré now flows past Trinidad . The Rio Guaporé flows into the border with Brazil . At Villa Bella, the Río Mamoré joins the Río Beni, which is around 8 percent richer in water, to form Madeira, the largest tributary of the Amazon.
Between the Bolivian city of Guayaramerín in the Beni department and the Brazilian city of Guajará-Mirim in the state of Rondônia on the east bank lies the 2.58 km² island of Isla Suárez , in Portuguese Ilha de Guajará-mirim . Their affiliation is controversial between the two countries. The administration is currently carried out by Bolivia.
Tributaries
The largest tributaries include (downstream):
- Río Grande (right)
- Río Secure (left)
- Río Tijamuchi (left)
- Río Apere (left)

navigability
The navigability of the Mamoré ranges from Chimoré at the foot of the Andes to a few kilometers before it joins the Rio Beni through the rapids there . The 380-kilometer Madeira-Mamoré Railway ends below the cataracts . Most of the tributaries are also navigable over longer distances.
