Roots Germania is a documentary in the form of a biographical essays from 2007, directed by Mo Asumang who also wrote the screenplay.
In the film, which was produced by MA Motion in coproduction with the ZDF series Das kleine Fernsehspiel and in collaboration with the Potsdam University of Film and Television , Mo Asumang searches for her identity as a black German.
action
The film portrays the creation of the documentary, the experiences and the journeys to her roots of the director Mo Asumang. The film idea was triggered by a hate song by the neo-Nazi band " White Aryan Rebels ", which calls for the murder of Mo Asumang and other celebrities. This worked like a trigger for Mo, which takes her across Germany, to England and to Africa in her documentary. Driven by the desire to lose her fear, Mo Asumang begins to grapple with the neo-Nazis . She wants to find out more about their justifications for the exclusion of migrants and confronts some of them directly.
Mo Asumang holds talks with imprisoned neo-Nazis and with prominent representatives such as Jürgen Rieger and films an NPD demonstration. In doing so, she encounters the appropriation of Germanic myths and symbols by National Socialism and Neo-Nazism. In her search for her own identity, she follows the Nazis' accusation: "Go to where you came from" . When she arrived in Ghana , she discovered that she was white there. During an ancestral ritual, Mo feels how she can heal herself from her fear and ignorance in Germany. Back at home, she travels across Germany, meets with scientists, visits Germanic cult sites, descends into the Himmler crypt of the Wewelsburg and suddenly finds herself in the middle of the Germans' past trauma, which has been allegedly felt by many over the years due to legal national theories "Amnesia of origin" led.
style
Her approach is partly psychological, partly dreamy with a strong pinch of comedy and then again profound. Asumang's peculiar “integration journey” does not lead the black German in “Roots Germania” away from her roots, as has almost become the custom in Germany, but rather leads her to the feminine side of her Germanic ancestors.
