The Rosa-Jochmann-Hof is a community building comprising 276 apartments in Vienna's 11th district, Simmering . It was designed in 1931/1932 by Josef Frank and Oskar Wlach .

history

In Red Vienna between the wars produced numerous municipal residential buildings, 17 of them in the 11th district. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were a few houses from the 19th century and an inn in the area of today's Rosa-Jochmann-Hof . The original planning stipulated that the residential complex should extend to Hasenleitengasse, but the decision was ultimately made on a reduced version of the project. Construction began in 1931. At the time of completion in 1932, the complex was the largest municipal building in Simmering, a year later this rank was transferred to the Strindberghof, which comprises 599 apartments .

In 1939 an increase was made, from 1988 elevators were installed. From 2004 to 2006 a general renovation of the residential complex took place, during which, among other things, the roof was re-covered, the windows and doors were replaced and a new playground was built. In addition, the facade was provided with a thermal insulation composite system and the residential complex was connected to the Vienna district heating network.

On September 10, 2013, the previously unnamed community building was named Rosa-Jochmann-Hof, after the resistance fighter and social democratic politician Rosa Jochmann, who was strongly associated with Simmering .

General

The residential complex is under monument protection ( list entry ) and is bordered by Simmeringer Hauptstraße, Fickeysstraße, Pleischlgasse and Strachegasse. In the area of the corner of Simmeringer Hauptstraße and Fickeysstraße (tram stop) there are three Wilhelminian style rental houses that are not part of the municipal building. A gap in the area of the intersection of Simmeringer Hauptstrasse and Strachegasse was closed in 1961 by another municipal residential complex. The Vienna Simmering transport station is around 250 meters to the north .

The four- to five-storey building comprises 22 staircases, which are grouped around a large, park-like inner courtyard as peripheral buildings. The otherwise rather simply designed complex is divided along the Simmeringer Hauptstraße on the facade side by a rhythmic arrangement of bay windows. The individual stairs are contrasted in color. Shops and restaurants are located in the ground floor zone on Simmeringer Hauptstraße.
