The Rosalienkapelle is a pilgrimage church in the municipality of Forchtenstein in Burgenland ( Austria ). It is located in the area of the Forchtensteiner cadastral community Neustift an der Rosalia on the Heuberg ( 748  m above sea level , also called Rosalia ), the highest point in the Rosaliengebirge .

history

The first chapel was built in 1644. In 1666 , Prince Paul Esterházy had a wooden church built in honor of the plague patron, Rosalia . The construction of a stone church began in 1670 based on its cross-shaped floor plan. In 1679 the church was extended with the right side altar and in 1681 with the left side altar. The pulpit was erected in 1682. Characteristic is the architectural style of the church, which has not changed to this day, with the roof silhouette structured by different ridge heights and a small tower with a pyramid helmet. The church was consecrated in 1680. Despite its massive construction, it kept the popular name of the chapel .

A special feature of the Rosalienkapelle is the baroque high altar , which dates from the construction period. It used to be a glass shrine with the reclining Rosalia integrated into it, which is now isolated in the chapel. Its former place at the high altar can still be clearly recognized as a non-image area. The right side altar, which is flanked by the plague cartridges Sebastian and Rochus , shows Saint Rosalia praying. The left side altar shows the holy mother Anna with Mary and the baby Jesus and is flanked by the saints Francis and Antony of Padua . The pulpit contains in shell-shaped statues of the four evangelists . A statue of the Archangel Michael is situated on the sound cover . Statues of Our Lady and Saint Rosalia are also placed in the church .

After the church repeatedly attracted many pilgrims and contributed significantly to the spread of the Rosalia cult in Hungary , the Archbishop of Gran and Primate of Hungary, Leopold Kollonitsch , donated a precious relic of Saint Rosalia in 1695 .

The church is only open to visitors between the beginning of May and the end of October on Sundays and public holidays for Holy Mass (10:30 a.m.) and afterwards. From the church, visitors have an overview of Forchtenstein Castle . On a clear day, the view extends over the Mattersburg basin to Lake Neusiedl and far across the border to Hungary. In the immediate vicinity of the church is the television and radio station Heuberg , which is visible far in the region .

Trivia

According to a legend , the Rosalienkapelle was built so that the spirit of the cruel castle lady Rosalia von Forchtenstein , who haunted Forchtenstein Castle at night , should find rest. Allegedly, the ghost is said to have ended with the construction of the Rosalienkapelle.

In 1997 the Austrian Post issued a special postage stamp worth 7 Schilling depicting Forchtenstein Castle and, above it, The Grausame Rosalia von Forchtenstein .
