Wrong Life, True Love is a German TV film by Stefan Bartmann from 2020 . The ZDF Sunday film starting in the “ Herzkino ” category is the 148th episode in the Rosamunde Pilcher film series , this time after the short story “A Saturday Afternoon” by the author . Marvin Linke , Leonie Brill , Paul Triller and Caroline Hartig play the leading roles in the film, Daniel Morgenroth and Stephanie Japp are cast in leading roles.

The ZDF press portal wrote: “For more than 25 years, the picturesque Cornish coast has been the setting for the longest running series in the ZDF 'Herzkino'.” Since the opening film on October 30, 1993, “well over 100 films have been based on the British successful author ”. The filming locations of the series would influence tourism in southern England, it said, for which the Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall, Prince Charles, the writer and the production company as well as ZDF had thanked in 2016.

action

Navy Lieutenant William "Bill" Pexton and Marc Oliver "Mo" Miller befriend each other during the combat divers' entrance examination. Mo has not fared as well in his life so far as Bill, who grew up in an intact family. He doesn't know his father, only knows that he should have been in the Navy. Little did the young men suspect that there is much more in common than a mere friendship. They were reversed as babies. Since this only came to light two years after their birth, their mothers decided to leave everything as they were, as the bond with the child in question had become far too strong. The two women wanted to stay in contact, but this failed because Mos “mother” suddenly disappeared with the child. Bill's "mother", Lady Theresa Pexton, wanted to continue to take part in the fate of her real child. She hired a private detective to follow the trail of the mother and child who led to South Africa. Lady Paxton's husband, Lord Frederic Pexton, took note of this with displeasure, because he would rather let the matter rest.

Both Mo and Bill miss the combat swimmer test, but the reason for Bill is that he doesn't want to just leave his fallen friend Mo behind. At the end of the day, Bill invites his new boyfriend to Cornwall, where his parents own an estate. During their drive there, they make a detour to visit Bill's friend Abigail Collins. Instead of Abby, Bill only meets her sister Doreen in the jewelry store that the sisters run. Bill doesn't know that the young woman, whose nickname used to be “Donut” because of her plump figure, has been in love with him for a long time. Since she was diagnosed with diabetes , Doreen has changed a lot from the outside and has become extremely slim. When he only sees her from behind, Bill holds her briefly for Abigail, Mo makes the acquaintance of Abigail at the same time, without realizing that she is Bill's friend. There is a huge crackling between the two. Mo takes a selfie and also types his phone number into the young woman's cell phone, which Abigail has willingly given him.

Mo is amazed when he sees the Pextons estate. Bill hadn't said much, not even that he came from a long-established noble family of officers, where it is customary for their sons to join the Navy, although Bill would have preferred to be a doctor. Lord Frederic and Lady Theresa give the young man a warm welcome, as friends of their son are always welcome. When Bill Mo introduces his girlfriend Abby, the young people hide the fact that they already know each other. Doreen, on the other hand, does everything in her power to suppress her feelings for Bill, also and especially because they harmonize so well with each other.

While everyone is still trying to get their emotions under control, Frederic suspects that Mo might be his biological son who had been swapped, whereby a naval badge that Frederic happened to see also plays a role. A comparison of the dates of birth underpins his assumption, which is increasingly confirmed. When Bill and Mo find out about it, at first glance they don't even know how to deal with it. Lord Frederic and Lady Theresa, however, are overjoyed and embrace their found son. The Lord is now doing everything in his power to have Mo officially recognized as his son and heir to his title. That doesn't make the situation easy for Bill, who increasingly feels like the fifth wheel on the car and thinks it is superfluous. But it is not Abby who supports him in this difficult situation, but Doreen. Nevertheless, Bill Abby proposes marriage, so everyone wants to hold onto the past. Abby, who is overwhelmed at the moment, accepts the proposal. The time seems to have come for Doreen to leave Cornwall.

Too much has changed between Mo and Bill for their friendship to remain untroubled. Then, surprisingly, Mo's foster mother appears and reveals that Lord Pexton is responsible for the fact that she went into hiding with Mo at the time. He had wanted to buy his son from her. This revelation triggers a falling out between the Paxtons, as Lady Paxton cannot and does not want to understand her husband's behavior. But Abby also has to admit that her dream of being Lady Paxton one day will not come true with Bill, since the title now goes to Mo. In addition, she feels much more attracted to Mo than she ever wanted to admit. However, she draws the logical conclusion and gives Bill his ring back.

A conversation between Bill and Mo clarifies a lot, for example that Doreen is the right woman for Bill and that his professional path will not be that of the military, but a medical degree. And so it happens that Mo gets his parents to reconcile and Bill dances with Doreen at Mo and Abby's wedding. When Doreen, looking at her sister, wants to know whether Bill is still sure that he has made the right decision, he kisses her and says, "absolutely sure".

criticism

The critics of the TV magazine TV Spielfilm kept their thumbs down and justified it as follows: “If it had stayed with the baby swap and the chance revelation through the chance friendship of the young men, one could have waved through the plot with a lot of goodwill. But with the sisterly love exchange on top, there is only one question left: seriously? "

Tilmann P. Gangloff gave the film three out of six possible stars on the tittelbach.tv website and summarized: “Many Pilcher films suffer from the fact that the male leading actors fade in the splendor of their attractive colleagues. Under such conditions the story of 'Wrong Life, True Love' […] with its two cross-relationships would not have worked at all. The swap of women is foreseeable early on, but then the romantic drama makes for a real hit, which gives the plot a completely different direction for the second half of the film. 'Herzkino' veteran Bartmann orients himself too much in his staging to the conventions of the broadcasting slot, but the young quartet - Marvin Linke, Leonie Brill, Paul Triller, Caroline Hartig - is worth seeing. "The film is, despite justified criticism of stereotypes , “Thanks to the family entanglements and the double romance, no waste of time”.
