Rose Gottemoeller

Rose Gottemoeller (born March 24, 1953 in Columbus , Ohio ) is an American diplomat . From 2016 to 2019 she was NATO Deputy Secretary General.

Life

Gottemoeller received a bachelor's degree from Georgetown University and an MA from George Washington University . She taught Soviet military policy at Georgetown University. From 1993 to 1994 she was Director for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia at the National Security Council in the White House , responsible for denuclearization in Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Belarus. Thereafter, Gottemoeller worked for three years as deputy director of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London .

She served as Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs in the United States Department of State while reporting to the United States Secretary of State . She was sworn in on April 6, 2009. Before that she was involved in various positions in disarmament negotiations. In October 2016 she succeeded Alexander Vershbow as NATO Deputy Secretary General.

In July 2019 Mircea Geoană was appointed as her successor as Deputy Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg from October 2019.
