Rose Hempel

Rose (marie) Hempel (born March 27, 1920 in Dresden ; † April 3, 2009 there ) was a German art historian with a focus on East Asia .

Life

Rose Hempel studied East Asian art history with Otto Kümmel in Berlin, then Japanology and Sinology . In 1944 she was born in Berlin with the work 36 Shikishi owned by the Staatliche Museen Berlin. A PhD contribution to the Koetsu-Sôtatsu problem .

She then worked for the State Museums in Berlin , then from 1946 to 1950 for the museums in Dresden , among other things as acting director of the Museum für Völkerkunde Dresden . For political reasons she left Dresden and worked for the Museum for East Asian Art in Cologne. From 1959 she became chief curator of the Hamburg Museum of Art and Crafts and head of the Asia department. She taught at the University of Hamburg .

Hempel published numerous publications and was considered a connoisseur of East Asian art of international standing, in particular Japanese painting and woodcut as well as East Asian ceramics. In addition, she was committed to the Association of Friends of the Dresden Kupferstichkabinett .
