Rosengarten was a band from the GDR underground scene .
history
The early years
It was founded in the spring of 1985 by Torsten "Pegman" Füchsel, Torsten "Thöni" Thönert, Torsten Fütterer, Alex Carstensson and Kirsten Hilke.
Although bands with English names also existed in the GDR, they were refused the desired band name “Rosegarden” by the local commission for granting the license to play (“classification committee”) , which is why they chose the German translation.
All members had their stylistic background in the post-punk era of the early eighties, primarily through bands such as Bauhaus , Joy Division , The Cure , Xmal Germany and Einstürzende Neubauten . Half of the texts were in German and half in English.
The band described their own work as "Psychedelic Punk". The song inventory included pogo-punk tracks, cover songs by Joy Division and psychedelic guitar compositions which, according to today's interpretation , would be referred to as " post rock ". Until the exit Torsten feeding device end of 1985 was also on Car Scrap played percussion dominant part of the sound and live performance. System-critical songs and provocative appearances led to the revocation of the public playing permit in the fall of 1986.
At this time two members left the band and sealed the temporary end of Rosengarten. Guitarist Kirsten emigrated to Amsterdam, singer Alex went to Berlin, where he founded the band B.Crown in 1988 with Torsten "Pegman" Füchsel .
The comeback
In the summer of 1987, Rosengarten returned to the public with a new look. The keyboardist Helge Semlow, who joined the "old" Rosengarten in the final phase, took over the vocals, his wife Marion took over the bass from Pegman, who from then on played guitar. The reshuffle was accompanied by a change in musical style. They are now devoting themselves to Dark Wave and have established themselves in this scene.
Rosengarten found a sponsor in Lutz Schramm , the editor of the " Parocktikum " program on the GDR youth radio program DT64 . Among other things, a concert by the band was broadcast on the radio. Lutz Schramm also ensured that a piece by the band called "Bessere Zeiten" could appear on the GDR record label AMIGA Sampler -LP "Parocktikum - die other bands" at the beginning of 1989 . The band also released several music cassettes.
