history

When the Spaniards settled in the mining region, they first brought a statue of the Virgin Mary to worship the Virgin of the Rosary to La Serena , then to Andacollo. Here the Marian cult was interwoven syncretistically with local worship and dances. After a first chapel from 1580, a parish church was built here in 1660 to present the statue of the Virgin Mary of the Rosary by Andacollo. This image was lost and was replaced in 1676 by a statue of the Virgin Mary from Lima , which is attributed miracles and which is venerated to this day. After the parish church was damaged by repeated earthquakes, it was replaced at the end of the 18th century. Today this building is known as the Old Church of Andacollo and has been preserved. When it became too small for the growing veneration, in 1869 the bishop of La Serena , José Manuel Orrego Pizarro , began building an additional, more important church on the property of the Nta Brotherhood . Señora Rosario de Andacollo decided. This was built from 1873 to 1893 with the help of the local population, among other things they made the clay bricks. Delays were caused by the difficult delivery of the building materials to the mountain village. 8,000 believers attended the consecration of the Great Church . The statue of the Virgin Mary of Andacollo was made at Christmas 1901 with the approval of Pope Leo XIII. canonically crowned . The church was declared a Historic Monument on January 12, 1981, together with the Old Church of Andacollo, under Decree No. 72. In 1998, Pope John Paul II granted the church the rank of minor basilica in its role as a pilgrimage church .
