Rosenthal is the only local district in the municipality of Kerzenheim in the Donnersbergkreis .

Geographical location

Rosenthal is located on the northern edge of the Palatinate Forest and its partial area Stumpwald . The local district, which is located to the west of Kerzenheim and named after the Rosenthal monastery , is divided into the villages of Göllheimer Häuschen , Grauwald-Siedlung, Kerzweilerhof, Rosenthalerhof and Steinäcker-Siedlung.

history

Rosenthal has a history that goes back to the Middle Ages, but the local district did not emerge until 1989 from the partially merged and newly established five settlement parts. There are several explanations for the name Rosenthal. The founder of the monastery, Count Eberhard II von Eberstein , included a red rose on a white background in the coat of arms. Because of the many wild roses, the valley is said to have been previously called the Rose Valley.

The Kerzweilerhof was first mentioned in 1229 as Curbißweiler in a document from the Worms cathedral chapter . The name is said to be derived from pumpkin gardens. The spelling changed several times over the years, including a. in Korbsweiler. In 1485 the neighboring Rosenthal Monastery acquired the village to convert it into a monastery property. Presumably, the place was abandoned when the monastery was closed in 1572 and was not settled again until 1688.

The Rosenthal Abbey was founded in 1241 by Count Eberhard II von Eberstein. Many daughters of country nobles joined the Cistercian abbey in the centuries to come. King Adolf von Nassau , who fell in the Battle of Göllheim on July 2, 1298, was temporarily buried here until eleven years later he could be transferred to the Speyer Cathedral . The monastery was subsequently affected by the turmoil of war several times, the end then brought the Reformation , in 1572 the monastery was dissolved by the then sovereign Count Philip IV of Nassau-Saarbrücken . Today's Rosenthalerhof emerged from the later secular use.

The "Göllheimer Häuschen" on the candle home area

Located on an ancient route through the forest already used by the Romans, the Göllheimer house was initially used as a hunting lodge or forester's lodge by the wealthy princes of Nassau-Weilburg . In the 18th century the building was sold and converted into a restaurant (first mentioned in 1778), which it has remained to this day.

The Grauwald and Steinäcker Settlements did not come into being until 1956 - at the same time as the Arles Settlement, which was part of Kerzenheim. With the establishment of the Landsiedlung Rheinland-Pfalz created new living space for displaced persons of the Second World War .

As early as 1827, the Kerzweilerhof and Rosenthalerhof, and thus the area of today's Rosenthal, were incorporated into Kerzenheim.
