Rosolino Pilo
Rosolino Pilo , also Rosalino Pilo, (born July 15, 1820 in Palermo , † May 21, 1860 in San Martino delle Scale ) was an Italian patriot .
Life
Rosolino came from the noble family of the Pilo from Genoa . The family moved to Palermo in 1560. Rosolino was the fourth son of Count Gerolamo di Capaci and his wife Antonia Gioeni. The boy lost his father early. For him the spiritual career with the Theatiners was planned. When his mother died in 1831, he left the seminary and became increasingly enthusiastic about the revolution. The rule of the Spanish Bourbons in southern Italy was a thorn in the side of the Italians in Palermo. So first of all, Pilo took part in the 1848 revolution in Sicily . Ferdinand II , King of the Two Sicilies , ultimately got the upper hand. Pilo fled to Genoa via Marseille . There he met Giuseppe Mazzini . In 1853, Pilo took part in the Milan revolt. In the summer of 1856 he allied himself with Carlo Pisacane in a renewed fight against the Spanish Bourbons in southern Italy. Both efforts to wage guerrilla warfare were unsuccessful. Pilo fled to Malta .
Soon after Giuseppe Garibaldi's victory over the Bourbons at Calatafimi , Pilo fell on May 21, 1860 near Monreale. A musket ball hit him in the head as he sat on a boulder and wrote a few lines to Garibaldi. Both freedom fighters marched on separate paths against Palermo on the day of the accident. Garibaldi took the Sicilian metropolis a week later.
