The Rosshorn , formerly Roßhorn ( 3,068  m above sea level ), is a summit of the Rieserferner group in East Tyrol near the Austrian-Italian border. The summit is near the Lenkstein and the Fenneregg . The Rosshorn does not have a summit cross and is often climbed as an additional summit on the way to Lenkstein.

The name Rosshorn refers to an alpine pasture used for horse riders in the immediate vicinity.

Increase opportunities

The ascent to the Rosshorn usually takes place via the Patscher valley and the Barmer hut ( 2610  m ). From the hut, the marked ascent initially descends north to the location of the old Barmer hut, which was destroyed by an avalanche, and then continues flat over granite blocks. The ascent takes place over the hillside terraces of the Rosshornscharte littered with blocks. At the northern end of the slope terrace is the upswing to the Rosshornscharte, secured by steel cables, which requires surefootedness and caution in old snow or wetness. After the Rosshornscharte ( 2916  m above sea level ) the path leads east over a block heap to the summit.

Another possibility for the ascent to the Rosshorn is via the South Tyrolean Bachertal, a side valley of the Reintal . The ascent to the Lenksteinjoch takes place via different variants of the Arthur-Hartdegen-Weg. The Kasseler Hütte (also Hochgallhütte, 2276  m ) can be used as a base. A third possibility of ascent is via the Fleischbachkees, either through the Seebach valley or the unmarked path along the Sebltal.
