Rote Jäger was a soccer team founded by the Luftwaffe officer Hermann Graf during the Third Reich . It consisted of members of his respective commanded the squadron , at times and ever changing from zuversetzten or abkommandierten to the squadron war guest players , including well-known national team .

background

Graf, himself an enthusiastic football player who also worked as a goalkeeper on the team , offered football players who had to accept detachments due to the course of the war, regardless of the location of his squadron, the opportunity in his team (if not in the clubs to which they already belonged) to be able to play.

In this team, which only played friendly games during the war, the national players Hermann Eppenhoff , Franz Hanreiter , Alfons Moog , Josef Stroh and Fritz Walter were active, who were temporarily spared from the front line , although it could happen that players were short-term were posted.

Even Reich coach Sepp Herberger , some trainers this military team that mediated players for Graf's Red Hunter , keep away from these to the front. However, since the squadron itself was relocated to the Eastern Front, after it had previously been stationed in the Lüneburg Heath and then in Jever , the Red Fighters were not spared from the war either.

Everything went wonderfully. No less than 30,000 soldiers came to watch. ... But I was unlucky. Shortly before the start of the game, I received the telephone order to fly escort for Hitler's Condor together with three other pilots, all of them bearers of the Knight's Cross. ”Hermann Graf in Fritz Walter, p. 74
