The Rothbach is a left and the first major tributary on the course of the Moder . It is almost 23 km long and contributes to the drainage of the Northern Vosges .

Surname

The name of the stream has nothing to do with the color red, but derives from the word clearing, which means stream in cleared land . Today the slopes on the upper reaches are densely wooded again.

The source of the Rothbach is a little south of the source of the Northern Zinsel , but already in Alsace , above Reipertswiller , which is the first place on the stream. The brook flows past numerous mills in many windings in a south-easterly direction to the village of Rothbach , where it reaches the Rhine plain . At Bischholtz it leaves the area of ​​the Vosges du Nord Regional Nature Park and flows via Mulhausen to Pfaffenhoffen , where it joins the Moder from the left.

Very high quality red sandstone is mined in the Rothbachtal . The stones with a bulk density of 2.24 t / m³ and a compressive strength of 64.4 N / mm² are z. B. used for the restoration of the Strasbourg Cathedral and also used in Germany (e.g. Hornbach Monastery , Pforzheim City Theater ).
