Rotherham is a small village in the Hurunui District of Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The village is located around 70 km southwest of Kaikoura and around 35 km from the east coast of the South Island, on the northern edge of the Amuri Plain . The New Zealand State Highway 70 runs through Rotherham and connects the village with Culverden, 12 km away, in the southwest and with Kaikoura in the northeast. The northeastern Waiau is 9 km from Rotherham .

history

Rotherham was established in 1877 for the district's workers. The village was probably named after Robert Wilkin and T. Hassall , who bought the land when it was divided in 1887 and named the village after the town of Rotherham in Yorkshire , England .

population

At the 2013 census, the village had 117 inhabitants.

earthquake

The village was also affected by the Kaikoura earthquake on November 14, 2016, which had its epicenter 3.6 km southwest of Waiau and thus near Rotherham . But in contrast to the north-east lying Waiau , the damage in Rotherham was limited. There was no major damage to the building.
