It is the only species of the genus Rhinecanthus in the Red Sea and is distinctive there.

features

The Red Sea Picasso triggerfish becomes 30 centimeters long. In terms of color, it is similar to the Indo-Pacific pelvic Picasso triggerfish ( Rhinecanthus verrucosus ), but lacks its characteristic dark spot on the belly. In the Red Sea Picasso triggerfish, the anal region is yellow or reddish brown from the otherwise whitish belly. In front of the tail stalk there is a white field, which is marked with three black vertical stripes.

Way of life

It lives in the shallow water of reef terraces and fringing reefs to a depth of ten meters. Young fish stay between knotty hard corals ( Acropora , Pocillopora and Stylophora ) or hide in snail shells. Red Sea Picasso triggerfish feed primarily on bottom-dwelling invertebrates.
