Rotraut Wisskirchen

Rotraut Wisskirchen (born June 23, 1936 in Hagen ; † August 1, 2018 in Bonn ) was a German Christian archaeologist and university lecturer .

Rotraut Wisskirchen studied in Munich and Bonn Jura ; then she worked as a lawyer at the Federal Ministry for Housing and Urban Development from 1965 to 1967 . She was married to the lawyer Alfred Wisskirchen; Her two daughters (* 1968 and 1966) are also lawyers.

In 1981 she began studying Christian archeology , ancient church history and patrology at the University of Bonn , which she completed in 1989 with a doctorate under Josef Engemann . The subject of the dissertation was The Mosaic Program by S. Prassede in Rome. Iconography and Iconology . From 1989 to 2017 she continuously held teaching positions at the universities of Bonn, Mainz , Cologne , Bochum and Wuppertal . Through regular annual excursions to the archaeologically relevant sites, she ensured that the students got to know the scenes of late antique history in southern Europe and the Middle East first-hand. In 2000, the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Bochum appointed her - the second woman and first Protestant - to be an honorary professor. In August 2010 she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
