The mountain slopes around the lake are forested in the lower layers, with the exception of a small section at the northern end with the boat landing stage from Tømmerneset, where the Sagelva also flows out of the lake and the road N835 (Riksvei 835) with the 8,079 km long climbing tunnel from the E6 branches off.

The Rotvatnet is the last and most northerly in a series of lakes, the so-called Sagvatnan ("Sagseen"), each of which drains into the next lower located. It itself drains north over the Sagelva River into the Sagfjord , a southern tributary of the Vestfjord . At its southern end, it passes over into Lake Strindvatnet at the narrow point “Nerstraumen”, which is only 100 m wide.
