Roy Bargy

Roy Bargy (born July 31, 1894 in Newaygo , Michigan , † January 16, 1974 in Vista , California ) was an American ragtime and jazz pianist , composer and band leader .

Live and act

Bargy grew up in Toledo, Ohio , where he took lessons from Johnny Walters and Luckey Roberts . In 1919 he worked for Charley Straight in the Imperial Piano Roll Company in Chicago as a musician, arranger and composer. From 1920 to 1922 he directed the Benson Orchestra of Chicago ("My Sunny Tennessee", recordings for Victor ); from 1922 he recorded piano solos for Victor. He also composed a number of ragtime numbers and novelty songs like "Knice & Knifty" or "Sunshine Capers".

In the mid-1920s he played in New York with Isham Jones , from 1928 with Paul Whiteman . During this time he also recorded with Bix Beiderbecke and Frankie Trumbauer , as well as with Red Nichols , Mildred Bailey (1931), Ramona Davies (1933), Adrian Rollini (1934) and with Charlie and Jack Teagarden ( The Three T's , 1936). In the post-war years he worked as an orchestra conductor, a. a. with Peggy Lee . In the field of jazz he was involved in 172 recording sessions between 1920 and 1948. From 1943 he worked as musical director for Jimmy Durante .
