Roy Gater (born June 22, 1940 in Chesterton , Staffordshire , † May 1, 2017 in Bournemouth , South West England ) was an English football player and coach.

Athletic career

Gater came from the youth of Port Vale . Coach Norman Low pulled him up in 1960 in the third-class third division competition team, but until the summer of 1962 the Half was only used irregularly there. Therefore, he moved within the league to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic . Here he was initially an undisputed regular player and twice played all 46 games of the season, and at times he led the team onto the field as captain . After six years, however, he was increasingly moved into the second tier and joined the league rivals Crewe Alexandra in January 1969 . With this, however, he was relegated to the fourth division in the summer , where he played until 1972. At FC Weymouth and Dorchester Town , he ended his active career in non-league football after more than 350 professional games .

Gater later worked as a coach at Christchurch FC and Poole Town in the amateur field.
