Royce Campbell

Royce Campbell (* 7. June 1952 in Seymour , Indiana ) is an American jazz - guitarist , composer and music producer .

Life

Royce Campbell's father worked in the Navy; so Royce grew up in various cities in the USA as well as in Asia, Europe and the Caribbean. At first he worked as a guitarist with rock and roll ; later role models were Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton . after graduating from high school in the early 1970s, he aspired to a professional career as a guitarist working for his uncle Carroll DeCamp, who had been arranger and pianist at Stan Kenton and Les Elgart and who taught his nephew music theory and composition. At the age of 21 Campbell went on tour with Marvin Gaye ; In 1975 he took part in three concerts by Henry Mancini in Indianapolis, who brought him to tour as a guitarist in his orchestra, where he stayed until Mancini's death in 1994.

After he had recorded a first solo album in 1983, Campbell began working as a musician and producer on his own projects in the 1990s; In 1993 the project G-5: A Tribute to Wes Montgomery was born , in which the guitarists Tal Farlow , Jimmy Raney , Herb Ellis and Cal Collis also participated. Guitarists Pat Martino , John Abercrombie , Larry Coryell , Dave Stryker and Bucky Pizzarelli played on his 1994 album 6x6 . In the subsequent Project G-5: A Tribute to Joe Pass (1999) he worked with Charlie Byrd , Gene Bertoncini , Mundell Lowe and John Pisano .

Campbell, who lives in Virginia, has also played with Mel Tormé , Sarah Vaughan , Ray Brown , Dave Brubeck , Joe Williams , Cleo Laine , Eddie Daniels , Eddie Harris , Frank Morgan, and Mose Allison throughout his career .
