action

The residents of Royston Vasey in northern England like to be among themselves and do not like strangers. However, when a bypass road is to be built through their place, they fear a wave of non-residents ("not locals") and get everything in motion to prevent the construction of the road, especially the two shopkeepers Tubbs and Edwards. Meanwhile, job advisor Pauline prevents her course participants from having a chance on the job market so that their own job is secured. The local veterinarian Dr. Chinery suffers psychologically from the phenomenon that every animal he treats soon dies a terrible death. The young hiker Benjamin Denton finds accommodation with his uncle Harvey and his aunt Val, who no longer want to leave him out. And the three work colleagues Geoff, Brian and Mike try to find common ground in their dreary everyday life in the pub in the evening.
