The Kotilangbülbül ( Pycnonotus aurigaster , syn .: Turdus aurigaster ), also called Rußhaubenbülbül , is a songbird from the family of the Bülbüls (Pycnonotidae). It occurs in Southeast Asia . Its natural habitat are subtropical or tropical humid forests in the lowlands .
Taxonomy and systematics
The first description of the Kotilangbülbül was in 1818 by Louis Pierre Vieillot under the scientific name Turdus aurigaster , so the species was originally assigned to the genus Turdus .
Subspecies
Nine subspecies are known:
- P. a. chrysorrhoides ( Lafresnaye , 1845) - Originally seen as a distinct species. Occurrence in southeast China
- P. a. resurrectus Deignan , 1952 - Found in southern China and north-east Vietnam .
- P. a. dolichurus Deignan , 1949 - found in Central Vietnam
- P. a. latouchei Deignan , 1949 - Occurrence from eastern Myanmar to southern China and northern Indochina
- P. a. klossi ( Gyldenstolpe , 1920) - Found in southeast Myanmar and northern Thailand
- P. a. Schauenseei Delacour , 1943 - Occurrence in Southeast Myanmar and Northern Thailand
- P. a. thais ( Kloss , 1924) - found in central and southern Thailand, central Laos
- P. a. germani ( Oustalet , 1878) - Originally seen as a separate species in the genus Ixos. Occurrence in south-east Thailand and in south Indochina
- P. a. aurigaster ( Vieillot , 1818) - Found on Java and Bali

- Appearance
The Kotilangbülbül in the adult stage has a black head, the neck and the nape are short, brown upper side, white trunk and underside as well as orange-red cloaca area. Juvenile birds are similar to the adult Kotilangbülbüls, but the head is more brownish and the cloaca area is less colored.

The Kotilangbülbül is 19-21 cm tall and weighs 40-50 g ( m = 46 g, w = 44 g).
- Breeding behavior
The Kotilangbülbül generally breeds in Southeast Asia between March - April and March - July in South China; throughout the year, but most often from March - June and August in Java. Its clutch comprises 3 to 4 eggs.
- Location behavior
The Kotilangbülbül is true to location.
- Vocalizations
The Kotilangbülbül sings frequently and pleasantly, a shrill, gurgling sequence of “whi-wi-wiwi-wiwi” sounds.
- nutrition
The Kotilangbülbül is a soft eater that consumes ripe fruits and insects. Therefore it is sometimes also considered a pest.

The stock situation of the Kotilangbülbül was classified in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2016 as " Least Concern (LC) " = "not endangered".
