Ruairí O'Brien

Ruairí O'Brien (* 1962 in Dublin ) is an Irish architect, lighting designer and artist.

Life

O'Brien grew up in Dublin (Ireland) and attended Blackrock College there . He then studied architecture at the University of Greenwich and the University of Westminster in London , at the University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh and at Columbia University in New York . He gained professional experience as a project architect in London, New York, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, Dresden and Berlin.

He is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects , a member of the Chamber of Architects of Saxony, was a member of the Professional Lighting Designer's Association (PLDA) until 2013 and has been Vice President of the Federation of International Lighting Designers (FILD) since 2014.

In 1995, O'Brien founded the architecture office "robarchitects", which was later supplemented by "robvisions". The studio “robvisions” combined O'Brien's art and cultural projects. Since 2009 the architectural office has been operating under the name “Ruairí O'Brien. Architecture. Light. Raumkunst. ”. In 2010 he founded the lighting planning company "archevolucio Ltd." (since 2015 operating under the name "Ruairí O'Brien. Lighting design.") And in 2014 the "Mobile School of Lighting Design". O'Brien is also an occasional freelance cartoonist and writer for the OECD Observer.

O'Brien has lived and worked in Germany since 1991. He lives with his family in a self-designed low-energy house in the Kaditz district of Dresden .

O'Brien has been Associate Professor for Architecture & Visual Design at the German University in Cairo since 2017 .

As a guest professor, O'Brien helped set up the international master's degree in Architectural Lighting Design at the University of Wismar from 2001–2005. - Ruairí O'Brien was president of the international Erich Kästner Society from 2011 to 2013 and is chairman of the board of the association for the Erich Kästner Museum in Dresden. O'Brien created the concept of temporarily located in Dresden plate Museum concrete timeline, which was removed in 2007, three years after opening. He was also active as a member of the working group for the development of the cultural model of the city of Dresden and founder of the working group for children and architecture in the Building Academy of Northern Europe (2001-2005).

His contribution to the competition for the European Center for Education and Culture Zgorzelec / Görlitz - Meetingpoint Music Messiaen won first prize in 2009, but was "... excluded for formal reasons because of non-compliance with the competition conditions ..." O'Brien sued the Meetingpoint Music Messiaen eV to payment for the design services commissioned after the competition. In 2013, the Görlitz district court passed a basic judgment in favor of O'Brien.

From 2013 to 2017, O'Brien was a board member of the Saxony Chamber of Architects and Chairman of the Public Relations Committee of the Saxony Chamber of Architects.
