Rudolf Allmann (born February 19, 1931 in Kötzschau ) is a German crystallographer .

Life

Allmann grew up in Wettelrode and graduated from high school in Sangerhausen in 1949. From 1949 to 1952 he studied chemistry and mathematics in Halle (Saale) to become a teacher and then taught. From 1955 to 1959 he studied in Marburg . There he came into contact with crystallography and began writing a dissertation with Erwin Hellner . In 1961 he followed Hellner to the Mineralogical Institute of the University of Kiel , but received his doctorate from the University of Marburg with the crystal structure analysis of an iodine addition compound. In 1964 he followed Hellner back to the chair for mineralogy at the University of Marburg. After a stay at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore 1966–1967 , he completed his habilitation in Marburg in 1968. The habilitation thesis dealt with bilayer structures with brucite-like layers. In 1970 he was appointed professor and worked until his retirement in 1996 at the Institute for Mineralogy, Petrology and Crystallography at the University of Marburg.

Allmann determined over 100 crystal structures of various substances and also dealt with the basics of crystal structure determination and measurement technology as well as the basics of structures. He also published a book on X-ray powder diffractometry .

After retiring from active service, he devoted many years to the critical revision and expansion of the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD). In 2009 the German Society for Crystallography awarded him the Will Kleber commemorative coin for this work .
