Erwin E. Hellner (born May 9, 1920 in Schneidemühl ; † September 12, 2010 ) was a German chemist , mineralogist and crystallographer .

Live and act

After being wounded in the war in 1939, he studied chemistry in Göttingen from 1940 to 1943, where he also received his doctorate on a crystal chemistry topic under Fritz Laves in 1945 . After renewed military service and American imprisonment, he carried out scientific work on intermetallic phases at the Philipps University of Marburg from 1946 to 1958 . In 1954 he received his habilitation in mineralogy. 1958/1959 he stayed at the University of Chicago.

In 1959 he was appointed to the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel , where he took over the management of the Mineralogical Institute. In 1964 he switched to the chair for mineralogy at the Philipps University of Marburg . Hellner was the initiator of the special research area 127 of the German Research Foundation "Crystal Structure and Chemical Bonding", which was set up at the University of Marburg from 1974 to 1986. He retired on September 30, 1988 in Marburg, but continued his research in the field of crystal structure systematics.

Hellner dealt with structure systematics and structure description of crystals, mathematical crystallography , methods of crystal structure analysis and the investigation of crystals , crystal growth , determination of physical properties of crystals, geological thermometry and high pressure crystallography .

Others

Erwin Hellner and his colleagues (including Rudolf Allmann , Hans Burzlaff, Werner Fischer and Elke Koch) initially used all of the mainframe computers available to them in Germany and beyond for their crystal structure investigations. Later they procured several large computing systems themselves and obtained information from various manufacturers for these procurements. This resulted in an exceptionally broad collection of written documents on historical computing systems ( Control Data Corporation : 1604, 3400, 3600, Honeywell : H316 , DDP-516 , IBM : 650 , 704 , 7040 , 7044 , 7070 , 709 , 7090 , 7094 , 1301 (disk drive) , 1410, System / 360 , Telefunken : TR 4 , Zuse : Z22 , Z25 ). This collection is now in the historical archive of the German Museum of Technology Berlin .
