Rudolf Barthelmess

Rudolf Barthelmess , also Rudolph Barthelmeß (* 1862 in Düsseldorf ; † 1939 there ), was a German genre and portrait painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Barthelmess, son of the copper engraver Nikolaus Barthelmess and his wife Maria, a sister of the copper engraver Rudolf Stang , attended the municipal secondary school in Düsseldorf until 1879 . Like his classmate Willy Spatz there , he then studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . Between 1879 and 1889, Hugo Crola , Heinrich Lauenstein , Peter Janssen the Elder , Eduard von Gebhardt , Julius Roeting and above all Wilhelm Sohn were his teachers at the Düsseldorf Academy . In October 1890 he enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . There he became a student of Ludwig von Löfftz . He then returned to Düsseldorf, where he lived in his parents' house at Immermannstrasse 18 in 1895/1896, was a member of the Malkasten artists' association and secretary in the Düsseldorf Artists' Association for mutual support and assistance , and exhibited portraits in the Eduard Schulte gallery . His son Rudolf Ernst Nikolaus was born here on February 18, 1897, and his daughter Gerda Maria on October 27, 1898.

His portrait Nikolaus Barthelmess was exhibited at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1890 .
