Rudolf Bodmer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rudolf Bodmer (born July 2, 1805 in Stäfa , † September 6, 1841 in Zurich ) was a Swiss painter, draftsman and etcher .

He is a brother of the well-known painter, draftsman, lithographer and etcher Karl Bodmer , who became world-famous as an "Indian painter " for his work on the natives of North America on behalf of Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied .

Life

After training as an etcher, lithographer and engraver by his uncle Johann Jakob Meier from Meilen, a landscape painter and engraver, Bodmer initially worked as a journeyman. He later lived near his brother Karl's family in the Zurich suburb of Riesbach . Around 1825, the two brothers went into business for themselves. Above all, prints ( vedute and vignettes ) were made, especially for the Zurich publisher F. S. Füssli . Bodmer also worked for F. Schmid, JJ Wetzel and A. Witthoff.

Karl Bodmer commissioned his brother to carry out the work during his travels in order to implement various printmaking techniques (especially aquatint ). This made Bodmer a valued specialist and artist for this technique. For the Koblenz publishers Jakob Hölscher , Franz Friedrich Röhling and Karl Baedeker , Bodmer then created a large number of aquatints of the Lahn , the Moselle and so-called "Rhine views", most of which were drawn by the Koblenz artist colleague Johann Adolf Lasinsky . As a rule, it was a matter of the printing technology implementation of landscape and architectural vedutas, especially of castle views and palaces of the Middle Rhine. The prints were sold - often colored - not only individually, but also loosely in so-called bundles (bundles) and various albums (Rhine travel books / Rhine albums), but sometimes without explanatory text or even without any imprint.

Bodmer mainly worked for other clients. It is therefore hardly possible to gain a complete overview of his life's work, especially since he is often not mentioned as a (co-) author or illustrator in book titles.
